Binaural Beats: Efficacy and Limitations
Binaural beats involve playing two slightly different frequencies in each ear. The brain perceives a third tone—the mathematical difference between the two—and may synchronize its brainwaves to this frequency (entrainment).
The Mechanism
If you play 400Hz in the left ear and 410Hz in the right, the brain perceives a 10Hz beat. 10Hz falls within the Alpha brainwave state, associated with relaxed focus.
The Evidence
While subjective reports of improved focus or relaxation are common, clinical EEG evidence for sustained neural entrainment is mixed. Some studies show localized entrainment, while others show no significant changes compared to a control tone.
However, the placebo effect and the general masking effect of continuous tones still render them useful for many individuals seeking a focus tool.
